Lemongrass lends its citrus-like aroma and zing to many Thai dishes. It is also used in herbal teas (tisanes) and has become a popular element in cocktails. It is a member of the Gramineae or Poaceae family. Cymbopogon means boat-beard in Greek. It is a long-lived, fragrant plant that is indigenous to South India and Sri Lanka.

It now spreads rapidly over Asia and tropical America. It’sleaves that have just been cut and slightly dried are utilized to extract essential oils, which are then used for therapeutic purposes.

This herb is grown for its flavoring-rich, fragrant leaves and stalks. The grass has multiple stiff stems and narrow, blade-like leaves that droop toward the tips, and it grows in thick clumps. The leaves are blue-green in hue and become red in the fall. When they are broken, they release a potent lemon scent.

Health Benefits

Numerous common conditions, including anxiety, colds, fever, inflammation, and insomnia, can be helped by lemongrass. It is frequently used as an oral remedy to relieve nausea, cramping, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. 1 When used medicinally, lemongrass can be ingested, applied topically, or used as an aromatherapy remedy.

How to store: Keep lemongrass covered loosely in the refrigerator with a paper towel. This way you can keep it fresh for up to a few weeks, Or, properly wrap it and freeze it. If you’re going to freeze it, think about cutting it up or slicing it, then freezing it in 1-tablespoon portions (an ice cube tray is helpful for this—freeze until hard, then transfer to a sealable plastic bag for longer-term storage), so it’s prepared to use.
